Description:
In 982, after the death of Li Ji-Yun, the great chieftain of the Tangut people, the tribe fell into chaos: rebellions, wars, and struggles for power. Amid this turmoil, Yuan-Hao, a descendant of the Tangut elders, with his great wisdom and courage, quelled the rebellions, eliminated rival powers, united the scattered lordships of China's western regions, and in 1038 founded the Great Xia state, establishing its capital at Xingqing Prefecture (present-day Yinchuan).
Yet Yuan-Hao was ambitious and unwilling to bow to the Northern Song and the Khitan. He dreamed of riding across the Central Plains, proclaiming himself emperor, and repeatedly launched wars against the Song, leaving fields barren, the people destitute, and the nation beset by troubles at home and abroad.
On New Year's Day in 1048, the contradictions accumulated over many years finally erupted: the crown prince stormed the palace with a sword and killed Yuan-Hao, only to be executed by the chancellor.
