Description:
In the 1950s, a young demobilized soldier named Zhang Bei-Xing was assigned to a small weather station in the mountains of the Greater Khingan Range in Heilongjiang Province. The old station master there, Zhao Qing-Shan, and his twenty-year-old daughter Yan Er warmly received him. The old station master's passionate selflessness and meticulous dedication deeply moved him and sparked in him a keen interest in the work of the weather station. Just then, his girlfriend Nan Nan from his native Guangzhou made a special trip there, hoping he could transfer back to Guangzhou and leave these sparsely populated, desolate and harsh old mountain forests. The request of his beloved was hardly unreasonable, but he could no longer tear himself away from this land. Suddenly a telegram arrived out of the blue: his father had died of illness. Zhang Bei-Xing was overcome with grief, and he and Nan Nan traveled through wind and rain back to Guangzhou for the funeral.
