Description:
The story begins in Beiping in 1937, amid the flames of war, when Tong Hua (Jie Yue) and Gu Cheng (Wang Xiao-Yang) are born. Tong Hua is the young mistress of a princely mansion, raised from childhood behind deep boudoir walls, unaware of the earth-shaking changes taking place in the world just beyond them. Gu Cheng lost his parents early and drifted alone through hardship, having tasted all the warmth and coldness of human nature — a thorough wild child.
Fate brings Tong Hua and Gu Cheng together. Though utterly different in character, they are drawn to each other. Luo Qiu-Shou, a revolutionary comrade of Gu Cheng's parents, finds the boy and adopts him, and Gu Cheng begins living under the same roof as Luo Qiu-Shou's son, Luo Shuan-Zi (Qian Bo). Later, Luo Qiu-Shou sends Gu Cheng to school, where he befriends Wang Xiao-Yong (Ding Ding). By coincidence, Wang Xiao-Yong's parents and Gu Cheng's parents were also old acquaintances.
