Description:
Wang Yu-Ping, a recent medical graduate, accompanied her classmate Wen Ming to a newspaper office on an errand. Suddenly from the street came cries of "Someone's been hit! Quick, save him!" They ran toward the sound and found a boy lying in a pool of blood. They immediately took him to the hospital. Malick, a West African exchange student interning there, operated on the child in time and gave him a blood transfusion during the rescue. The boy was saved. Wang Yu-Ping and Malick were each struck by the other's actions, but because the rescue was so rushed, neither left the other's name. Show more
Malick searched for a long time but could not find her. Later, from memory, he carved a portrait head out of wood and showed it to department head Yang Hua, who immediately recognized the person as Wang Yu-Ping, a recent medical school graduate, and told Malick that she would soon come to their hospital for her internship. Later, during the internship, they went from acquaintance to mutual understanding to love. Still from "Marrying into Africa"
After many twists and turns, breaking through resistance from society and family, Wang Yu-Ping finally boarded a plane heading west. By then, however, Malick, having refused an arranged marriage, had been placed under house arrest by his grandfather Na Ta. When Wang Yu-Ping set foot on West African soil and walked out of the airport, the one she loved was not there to meet her. With Fang Da's help, Malick had already escaped his grandfather's confinement. Fang Da had been Malick's sweetheart before he went abroad to study; they had later broken up, but Fang Da had always loved him deeply. In his haste to find Wang Yu-Ping, Malick lost his temper, quarreled with a policeman and struck him, and was detained; only through Fang Da's mediation was he released. Wang Yu-Ping was about to board a plane back to her homeland when suddenly Malick's voice came over the airport loudspeaker: "Xiao-Ping, it's me, Malick. Don't go. I love you—" Filled with deep doubt, Wang Yu-Ping met with Malick. To survive, Malick had no choice but to work as a doctor at Fang Da's clinic to make a living. But Malick did not return Fang Da's love, which caused her great anguish. In one conflict, Fang Da, in front of Wang Yu-Ping, revealed her past with Malick, which shocked Wang Yu-Ping deeply. She fell into extreme pain and, in a fit of anger, left home. She first stayed with Yang Hua of the medical team and planned to return to her homeland. Malick's younger brother Sai Gu was a lovely child, and in his time with Wang Yu-Ping they had built a deep friendship. He witnessed everything that happened at home; he understood his brother and also deeply sympathized with Wang Yu-Ping. So, without telling his family, he went alone to the medical team's quarters and, in the moonlight, sang the Chinese song "The Loess Plateau" that Wang Yu-Ping had taught him… Wang Yu-Ping came back, and Malick explained everything about his past with Fang Da, and she forgave him. To free himself from Fang Da's pursuit and financial control, Malick decided to take a post at another hospital, Ba Ke's clinic. Fang Da, enraged and humiliated, burned down the clinic in a fit of fury and was hospitalized with burns. When Wang Yu-Ping learned of this, she was moved by Fang Da's spirit of sacrificing everything for love, suggested that Malick go to the hospital to care for Fang Da, and went herself to visit. Wang Yu-Ping's actions also deeply moved Fang Da. One day, Wang Yu-Ping went to Ba Ke's clinic to see Malick and happened upon a patient suffering terribly from gastric spasms. When everyone was at a loss, Wang Yu-Ping treated the patient with acupuncture, and he quickly recovered. Ba Ke was won over by Wang Yu-Ping's medical skill, and at his warm invitation she soon came to work at Ba Ke's clinic as well. Using traditional Chinese medicine, herbal remedies and acupuncture, she treated many patients with difficult illnesses, sometimes even risking her life to go to poor regions to save patients. She was soon hailed by the people of West Africa as "the Daughter of God." Various news media introduced and promoted her, and Wang Yu-Ping became a local celebrity. Malick's grandfather Na Ta was now caught in a dilemma; he too was moved by Wang Yu-Ping's noble character, but the clan, though afraid to speak out, was angry at Na Ta's stubbornness. Later, Wang Yu-Ping used Chinese medicine and acupuncture to treat an old woman who had been blind for many years, and under her careful care the old woman finally regained her sight. Unexpectedly, she turned out to be Na Ta's sweetheart from years ago; back then, because of tribal class distinctions, the two young lovers had not been able to be together. When the old woman learned that Na Ta did not acknowledge Wang Yu-Ping and would not allow her to hold a wedding with Malick, she resolutely took Wang Yu-Ping to the estate to see Na Ta. Na Ta finally acknowledged this granddaughter-in-law from China and held a grand wedding for them!
