His father betroths to him the daughter of an old friend, Chu-Jun, famed as the most beautiful woman in the capital, but Liu Zhong-Yan takes no interest in the gentle and lovely Chu-Jun. Show more With the rebellious princess Xiao-Rou, whom he first fights and then befriends, he quietly begins a romance. The leak of a secret about a palace birth changes their relationship: it turns out that Xiao-Rou is not the emperor's own flesh and blood, but the illegitimate daughter of the powerful court minister Ao Bai and the empress. As the matter comes to light and involves several major cases tied to Ao Bai, Liu Zhong-Yan, holding fast to his principles, decides to investigate it to the very end. Heartbroken, Xiao-Rou is in the end gravely wounded and dies. Liu Ji-Xian ultimately stands on the side of justice and uncovers the truth.
