Description:
A palace rebellion, the reigning emperor retreating into monkhood — a panoramic portrayal of the schemes and passions of two generations of Ming emperors. Merits that overshadow the sovereign, the execution of a savior chancellor whose corpse is left in the wilderness — a grand exposé of the cruel murder of Yu Qian, a mystery spanning the ages.
In 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang unified China. After more than eighty years of tireless governance by successive generations, the realm was at peace and the frontiers were unified; by the time Emperor Yingzong ascended the throne, the Ming dynasty had entered its golden age... Show more
During the Zhengtong era of Yingzong's reign, the eunuch Wang Zhen seized control of the court, purged dissenters, forced the Empress Dowager Sun, who ruled from behind the curtain, to return power to Yingzong, and framed loyal ministers. Through treachery he had the Vice Minister of War Yu Qian thrown into a death cell, until court discipline collapsed and corruption spread ever more rampant through society.
The Mongol Oirat army seized the moment to invade on a grand scale. With the border in dire peril, Yingzong, at Wang Zhen's urging, personally led a campaign, only to be trapped at Tumu. His five hundred thousand troops crumbled, all the civil and military officials died on the battlefield, and Yingzong was captured alive by the Oirats...
In the crisis, the Empress Dowager Sun ordered Yu Qian's death sentence revoked and summoned him back to court to take charge of the desperate situation. Yu Qian turned the tide. To counter the Oirats' vicious scheme of using the captive emperor to seize cities and territory, he disregarded future consequences and enthroned Yingzong's half-brother Zhu Qiyu as emperor, then personally went to the front to command the troops. By strategy he routed the Oirats and brought Yingzong back — yet a covert struggle for the throne now unfolded between Emperor Jingtai and Yingzong...
Yu Qian, determined to restore the greatness of Ming, steeled himself to set the court in order, vigorously pushed new reforms, investigated illegal minting, and rooted out corruption — only to meet fierce opposition from the powerful and suffer setback after setback...
By the seventh year of Jingtai, Shi Heng and other treacherous factions secretly plotted to restore the retired emperor. The "Gate Seizure Coup"
