Description:
At two in the morning, gunshots suddenly rang out near the Rose Garden residential compound. Qiu Cheng-Gui, the city's director of foreign trade, lay in a pool of blood. Zhu Guang, deputy head of the city's criminal investigation brigade, was ordered to take the case, but Nan Ping, the public security bureau chief, rescinded the order and told Zhu Guang to hand the case to Deputy Brigade Chief Shi Jin-Hao.
Zheng Li-Yao, the mayor's daughter and Zhu Guang's wife, was delighted to learn that her husband had taken on this major case. She saw it as a golden opportunity for him to win merit, receive commendation and be promoted. But things soon took a different turn. After Qiu Cheng-Gui's death, He Si-Qin, deputy director of the foreign trade bureau and the mayor's wife, naturally stepped into the director's seat and began auditing the accounts Qiu Cheng-Gui had handled.
Meng Cai-Yun met with Zhu Guang and told him she had given herself to Qiu Cheng-Gui because her father's kidneys had failed and she urgently needed a hundred thousand yuan for a transplant. Zheng Li-Yao was convinced that her stepmother He Si-Qin had meddled in the reassignment of the murder case, and she confronted her father, the mayor. Zhu Guang urged his wife not to get involved, but Zheng Li-Yao declared she would expose the whole affair.
Mayor Zheng criticized He Si-Qin for interfering in the public security bureau's handling of the case. He Si-Qin said her niece He Yan was passionately in love with Shi Jin-Hao, and she wanted to help him find a chance to win merit. Zheng Li-Yao asked Luo Fei, a reporter for the city newspaper, to write an article titled "Behind the November 7 Murder." Once it was published, the city of Jin-Yang exploded.
Sun Qi, a convict Shi Jin-Hao had sent to prison, came out and tracked down Tian Fang-Fang, vowing to settle scores later. The foreign trade bureau announced that Tian Fang-Fang was laid off, and she scraped by selling from a street stall. Through Zhu Guang's patient efforts, Meng Cai-Yun confessed that the money she had sent home had been given to her by Qiu Cheng-Gui, and she also revealed that her former boyfriend Chang Lei had secretly come to Jin-Yang before the murder. Just then Meng Cai-Yun disappeared, and Tian Fang-Fang's home was ransacked by uninvited visitors.
Shi Jin-Hao sent men to Meng's hometown and froze the savings she had used to treat her father. Zhu Guang said Meng could continue using the money for her father's treatment, and Meng Cai-Yun was deeply moved. Zheng Li-Yao insisted on blowing the matter up and invited Liang Zi-Heng, a department head at the provincial newspaper. Officials scurried about, fawning over Liang Zi-Heng in every way, hoping to turn a critical article into a positive one.
