Description:
Since the Qing Yongzheng era, the Le family's old shop, Tongrentang, had been designated the imperial medicine supplier, and by the eighth generation of the Le family its fame had grown tremendously. Patients flocked to it from far and wide seeking its medicines, while the Japanese ronin Xiao Ye conspired with Cao Hua-Lun, who had grown up in the Le household, plotting to seize the secret formula book.
Cao Hua-Lun was caught by the old master Le Hong-Da while stealing the formula; he attacked and set fire, burning down the Le family's fine medicinal storehouse. Show more He then colluded with Bai Tai-Jian of the imperial pharmacy to withhold the imperial medicine funds, making the old shop's troubles even worse—no money to make medicine, no medicine to sell. Wang Ye mistakenly believed the Le family was being evasive, and in a rage ordered the revocation of the Le family's imperial medicine supplier status and called for new bids. Facing troubles within and without, the elder Le Hong-Da, to preserve the two-hundred-year-old brand, resolutely passed the seal across a generation, giving the shop seal to his grandson Le Hong-Da.
Le Hong-Da took on the mission at this critical moment. With the help of his wife Xu Rui-Zhen, he achieved the impossible and won back the imperial medicine supplier status, and received a plaque bestowed by Emperor Guangxu. Cao Hua-Lun then incited Wang Ye to order that the old shop could no longer sell medicine to the common people, only to the court. Le Hong-Da came to understand that "in office one should be a good minister, out of office a good physician," that "in office one benefits the world, out of office one benefits the people," and he "defied the decree" to sell medicine. Le Hong-Da vigorously assisted his grandson, using the illness of the chief steward Li Lianying to turn the tide with a single medicine. At last the Empress Dowager lifted the ban.
The actress Cong Yu-Zhu, who had drifted to Beijing and been taken in by the Le family, secretly loved Le Hong-Da, yet to rescue Le Hong-Da from prison, she sacrificed herself and married Cao Hua-Lun.
During the Sino-Japanese War, the Qing army went to Korea to resist the enemy. Le Hong-Da rushed to produce a hundred thousand packets of "Zhuge Marching Powder" to give to the soldiers, but the medicinal merchants took the opportunity to raise prices, leaving him deeply in debt. At the year's end, creditors pressed for payment, and Le Hong-Da, with no way to borrow, angrily sold the ancestral home. When the medicinal merchants learned the reason for the donated medicine, they generously gave up their claims. The old shop once again survived against the odds.
The maid Lan Xiang's father, Hu Qi, escaped death and was falsely accused and pursued. The Le family sheltered Hu Qi, but was betrayed by Cao Hua-Lun. Le Hong-Da took Lan Xiang as his adopted granddaughter. With Xu Rui-Zhen's matchmaking, Lan Xiang and Le Hong-Da happily married.
The Eight-Nation Alliance bombarded Dashilan, and the old shop's hall was reduced to ashes. Le Hong-Da ordered Le Hong-Da and Xu Rui-Zhen to escort the pregnant Lan Xiang out of the capital, to preserve the Le family line. Xiao Ye led Japanese soldiers into the Le house to search for the secret formula, and Le Hong-Da (should be Le Kuo-Hai) repaid him with poisoned wine, perishing together with him.
Le Hong-Da slipped back into the capital, overcome with grief. He found the secret formula book treasured by his grandfather and hid it in Le Hong-Da's coffin. Cao Hua-Lun grew suspicious and opened the coffin at night; Xu Rui-Zhen and the righteous actor Xiang Jiu-Xiao devised a plan that frightened Cao to death.
The old shop reopened on the ruins, but Le Hong-Da, having suffered so much, passed away. On his deathbed, it happened to be his son Le Tongren's first birthday "zhuazhou" ceremony. Among the official caps, ingots, brushes, and silks spread across the table, little Tongren grasped the "Tongrentang Pharmacopoeia"
