Description:
An old minister and a young sovereign lock horns in courtly battles, neither giving way; in their war of words, the young sovereign and the old minister each have their own strengths. In the prequel to this drama, "Li Wei Becomes an Official 1," Li Wei rose from a street rogue to a celebrated official of his age. In this series, it all begins after Yongzheng has passed away and Qian Long has ascended the throne. As the saying goes, a new sovereign brings new ministers: from the very start of his reign, Qian Long did not like Li Wei at all, and above all could not stomach the rogue's airs about him. Show more But since Li Wei was an old minister of the previous reign, it was already good enough that he was granted a measure of face. Li Wei was clever beyond his years, and Qian Long had grown up before his eyes in Prince Yong's household, so he knew that this new emperor was utterly different from Yongzheng in both conduct and character. Therefore, from the very beginning, he resolved to resign and go home to farm. Young Qian Long, lacking experience, often found things turning out contrary to his wishes: the more he tried to display his talents, the more often he landed in awkward situations. And Li Wei, longing only to resign and return to his native place, found that the more he tried to hide, the less he could escape; thanks to his shrewdness and seasoned skill, he handled one thorny matter after another flawlessly, each time saving Qian Long's face. So where others could not climb up no matter how they tried, Li Wei wanted to come down but simply could not...
Qian Long felt deeply conflicted about Li Wei: he neither liked him nor could do without him. When Li Wei annoyed him most, that was precisely when Li Wei pulled off something brilliant; when he wanted to promote Li Wei, Li Wei himself stepped back and repeatedly submitted petitions to resign, leaving the emperor unable to be angry or to hate him. Li Wei, facing Qian Long, was equally helpless: bound as they were by the roles of sovereign and subject, he could not overstep.
