The story takes place in the early winter of 1932. In Jiangxi, the red cradle of the Chinese revolution, there is a mountain village called Liuxi, where several dozen poor families live. Having endured the exploitation and oppression of the tyrant Hu Han-San, starving and freezing, they live in dire straits!
Eight-year-old Pan Dong-Zi is just an ordinary child from a poor family. Together with his friend Chun Ya-Zi, he gazes at the Southern Mountain day after day, hoping that his father, who has joined the Red Army, will soon fight his way to Liuxi, do away with Hu Han-San, and avenge his grandmother and mother, who were persecuted by Hu Han-San. When Hu Han-San learns that the Red Army is about to cross the Southern Mountain, he panics and prepares to flee in haste. Before leaving, he viciously threatens: even if he has to go, he will kill Dong-Zi and his mother and pull the weeds out by the roots!
Under the big banyan tree at the village entrance, Dong-Zi and his mother are bound hand and foot and hung from the tree. Hu Han-San shouts viciously: "If any family's man dares to become a Red bandit again, the Pan mother and son will be their fate! Fire!" At the critical moment, a squad of Red Army soldiers who were the first to rush into the village surrounded the big banyan tree. Hu Han-San, with nowhere left to turn, and several lackeys of the militia surrendered. Dong-Zi's father, Pan Xing-Yi, ran forward and cut the ropes binding Dong-Zi and his mother.
The Red Army marched mightily into Liuxi Village. Chun Ya-Zi ran back and forth among the Red Army ranks but did not see his father, Song Da-Guang, whom he had longed for day and night. Pan Xing-Yi told Grandpa Song that Chun Ya-Zi's father had died heroically in a recent battle. Grandpa Song, suppressing his grief, urged Pan Xing-Yi not to let the boy know.
The Red Army liberated Liuxi, and the people of Liuxi, long enslaved and exploited by Hu Han-San, were overjoyed. Amid the sound of firecrackers, a wooden plaque reading "Liuxi Soviet Government" was hung in front of the Hu family compound. Liuxi formed a Red Guard, and Dong-Zi's mother was elected chairman of the Women's Rescue Association.
Dong-Zi, Chun Ya-Zi, and Xi Mei-Zi picked up their schoolbags and, together with more than a dozen children of all ages from Liuxi Village, entered the Lenin Primary School. The young Red Army woman soldier Liu Qin became their teacher. The children also formed a Children's Corps with red-tasseled spears in hand, and amid the applause of his companions, Dong-Zi put on the red armband of the Children's Corps leader.
Hu Han-San was locked in his own dungeon. Red Guard members took turns standing guard, waiting only for the public trial to begin, when the Liuxi Soviet Government would publicly execute the villainous Hu Han-San. Because the father of Dong-Zi's friend Pang-Zai, Luo Ma-Zi, became a "traitor," Hu Han-San escaped from Liuxi. Dong-Zi, who was playing games with the children, discovered Hu Han-San's escape and bravely struggled with him.……
In the blink of an eye, several months passed, and it was already late autumn. Pan Xing-Yi packed his bags and, together with the troops, began the fifth bitter counter-encirclement battle. To support the Red Army's front-line operations, all the men, women, old and young of Liuxi Village were mobilized. In the Soviet Government at the Hu family compound, people cleared and rearranged houses and set up a temporary Red Army hospital. Wu Xiu-Zhu led the stretcher team in and out, transporting wounded soldiers evacuated from the front. Dong-Zi's mother led the sisters in serving as nurses, feeding the wounded soup and medicine.
Dong-Zi and his companions gathered together and discussed bringing food to the Red Army uncles fighting the White Dogs in the Northern Mountains. When the children climbed over ditches and ridges and walked deep into the mountains in the direction from which the gunfire came, they suddenly saw in the valley at their feet a column of White Dogs trudging through the mud. The clever and brave Dong-Zi led his companions in setting up a "bamboo-hat formation" for the enemy, throwing them into panic and making them think a great enemy was upon them. This foiled the enemy's plan to sneak-attack the Red Army's rear, and the Red Army uncles, hearing the commotion, came and surrounded and annihilated the enemy, winning a great victory.
Due to the erroneous command of the leftist line, the fifth counter-encirclement battle failed. Just as Pan Xing-Yi had healed his leg wound and was preparing to ask for battle and return to the front, he received orders from above to withdraw from the newly established Liuxi base area and, together with the Central Red Army, begin a strategic transfer to the north, starting the arduous and extraordinary Long March of twenty-five thousand li. Liu Qin also said goodbye to the children.
To replenish the Red Army's strength, the Party organization decided to split the Liuxi Red Guard in two: one part was incorporated as a squad of the Sixth Red Battalion, and the other part, together with a company of the Sixth Red Battalion, formed a guerrilla detachment to remain locally and wage guerrilla warfare. The scene of seeing off the Red Army was both warm and solemn! Before parting, Pan Xing-Yi gave Dong-Zi and Chun Ya-Zi each a red five-pointed star.
The news of the Red Army's secret withdrawal from Liuxi quickly reached Hu Han-San's ears through the reconnaissance of Central Army spies. Hu Han-San, sharpening his knives, formed a "Return-to-the-Village Corps," killed his way back to Liuxi, and began a mad and bloody cruel revenge. As soon as he entered the village, Hu Han-San sent his lackeys in several groups to arrest Dong-Zi's mother and son, Grandpa Song and his grandson, and the families of several other Red Army and Red Guard members. A bloody massacre took place in Liuxi……
After dawn, the Red Army family members who had escaped the pursuit scattered separately. Dong-Zi's mother and Grandpa Song decided to take the wounded Red Army soldiers and lead Dong-Zi, Chun Ya-Zi, and Xi Mei-Zi up the mountain to find the guerrillas, and they stayed in the guerrilla camp.
Dong-Zi's mother's application to join the Party was approved by the Party organization. On the very next day after joining the Party, Dong-Zi's mother slipped into Liuxi late at night to secretly organize the masses to smuggle military grain up the mountain. Because Luo Ma-Zi betrayed the revolution and went over to Hu Han-San, at the critical moment when the enemy was about to surround them, Dong-Zi's mother, in order to cover the masses' escape from danger, died heroically!
