Description:
Late 1980s, a remote mountain village in the north.
The little girl Xiao Hua (Qi Ru-Yi) loses her father, mother and grandmother one after another and is left an orphan. She is taken in by the village elder and a local family, but her days are spent in tears and humiliation. Unable to bear it, she runs away from her native village of Shanghe. When she reaches the outskirts of Shaoyao village, exhausted and starving, Xiao Hua collapses unconscious and is rescued by passing villagers. The villagers pity the homeless child, but none dares to adopt her, fearing the already crushing burden of their own lives. The aged Bao Zhu's father (Tien Cheng-Jen) is a kind-hearted old man. Afraid that the barely breathing Xiao Hua may not survive, he ignores the objections of his son Bao Zhu (Yu Wei-Jie) and daughter-in-law Xiang Cao (Hao Yang) and quietly carries her home. Thus the grandfather and granddaughter, bound by no blood, begin a life of mutual dependence. Xiang Cao, unable to bear children, regards Xiao Hua as a thorn in her side, but even her hardened heart cannot help but slowly melt before the warmth and tears of a girl so remarkably sensible and kind.
