The appearance of the wastrel Xu Yan reveals to Wang Ruo-Ruo that the thief is in fact Wu Zhao. With their family's help, the two leave the Wang household.
Wang Ruo-Ruo accidentally learns that the thief is a swindler. After fleeing from him, she runs into bandits. The thief risks his life to save Wang Ruo-Ruo and frankly confesses that he is the real Xu Yan, and that he entered the Wang household only for the marriage contract.
When Wang Ruo-Ruo wants to tear up the marriage contract, she discovers that Wang Lao-Ye had known everything all along and was deliberately toying with the children.
