Description:
In the spring of 1949, amid the fierce fighting at the Battle of Huangmaling, the Kuomintang brigade commander Lan Zheng-Hong builds mother-and-child bunkers and stubbornly resists our army's advance. Our Huaye battalion commander Tie Liang decisively organizes a shock squad, disguises his men as Kuomintang soldiers, and infiltrates the enemy position. While destroying the mother-and-child bunkers, he is gravely wounded and falls unconscious. But Lan Zheng-Hong mistakes Tie Liang, dressed in a Kuomintang uniform, for a hero of the Nationalist army and has him escorted to Shanghai for treatment — this is Tie Liang's first time in the city.
Regiment commander Xiao Jian-Dong, believing Tie Liang dead, rescues his fiancee Du Juan from the Kuomintang bandits; she has come alone from the old Shandong base area to find Tie Liang. To care for the helpless Du Juan and protect her reputation, Xiao Jian-Dong nevertheless marries her.
After regaining consciousness, Tie Liang reveals his true identity to Lan Zheng-Hong and urges him to defect and join the uprising. With the help of the underground party member Shangguan Yan, Tie Liang returns to his unit and takes part in the Danyang retraining. Facing Tie Liang, who has come back alive, Du Juan's feelings begin to change...
In May 1949, three comrades who shared every day and faced death together — Tie Liang, Xiao Jian-Dong, and Li Si-Ben — carrying the rules for entering the city written personally by Commander Chen Yi, march mightily and proudly into Shanghai with our Huaye army. After entering the city, they are ordered to transfer to the garrison regiment to defend greater Shanghai, and thus begins another battle, one without gunpowder smoke.
Facing the sinister schemes of the enemy agent known as the Heartless Empress, the silver dollar turmoil, the "two whites and one black" incident, and the financial crisis stirred up by unscrupulous merchants and Kuomintang remnants, as well as the dazzling life and the waves of temptation that surround them at every moment, their lives begin to change too. After weathering every storm, Tie Liang and Xiao Jian-Dong stand firm with unwavering revolutionary faith and defeat the enemy, becoming heroes of entering and defending the city, while Li Si-Ben, once a combat hero, beginning with the temptation of a tiny gold necklace, slides toward corruption, and his final downfall leads him to commit an unforgivable crime... With tears in his eyes, Tie Liang signs the order for the execution of this comrade who once shared hardship and faced death with him; the hero of taking the city ultimately becomes the defeated in its defense.
Two years of breathtaking city life come to an end. Tie Liang goes off to fight in Korea, Xiao Jian-Dong follows the army south, and Li Si-Ben embarks on a road of no return.
