Description:
In the late Qing dynasty, Emperor Dao Guang felt keenly that his strength was failing him and agonized day and night over establishing an heir to the throne. Among his many sons, he valued two above all: the steady and benevolent Yi Zhu and the wise, brave, and gifted Yi Xin, and for a time he could not decide. Yi Zhu, Yi Xin, and the tutors scheming behind them constantly tried to fathom Emperor Dao Guang's mind, battling wits and courage for the position of heir. At last, against the contrast of Yi Xin's flamboyant boldness and Yi Zhu's benevolent detachment, Emperor Dao Guang chose Yi Zhu. Show more While establishing Yi Zhu as heir, he issued an edict making Yi Xin the "Grand Prince Gong."
Emperor Dao Guang passed away, and Yi Zhu ascended the throne as Emperor Xian Feng.
Emperor Xian Feng was weak by nature, suspicious and fickle, and what had once been a rivalry between brothers with Grand Prince Gong now became a rift between ruler and subject. The entire court of officials could not help but sometimes guess at the imperial will and sometimes follow the wind and cling to power, and for a time state affairs fell into disorder.
Affairs changed abruptly, and the capital was in crisis. In his panic, Emperor Xian Feng left Grand Prince Gong to handle foreign matters while he himself fled the capital with his empresses and consorts.
Under the bayonets and coercion of the foreign powers, Grand Prince Gong signed a series of treaties that humiliated the nation and forfeited its sovereignty. In humiliation and grief, Emperor Xian Feng handed the affairs of state to the two empresses and the "mandated ministers" and despairingly breathed his last.
After Emperor Xian Feng's death, foreign humiliation was not yet removed and internal strife continued unabated.
