Description:
Moving an entire steel city along the Yangtze from Wuhan to Chongqing — an undertaking without precedent. For the fight against the Japanese invaders, the Lu and He families went through it together and forged a bond of kinship spanning three generations.
In the late Qing, Lu Meng-Sheng (Liu Xiao-Feng) — the posthumous son of a soldier of the 1894–1895 Sino-Japanese War — was taken in and raised by Zhang Zhi-Dong. With He Zi-Zhou (Lin Xi-Yue), two years his elder, he grew up as close as a brother. Show more
Da Dao-Shu, an orphan, a Chinese girl, was adopted by Oshima Taro, an engineer at Japan's Yawata Iron Works. Taken for a Japanese, her whole life is one trial after another.
The three met at the Hanyang Iron Works. Lu and He call Da Dao-Shu (Michelle Ye Xuan) a remarkable woman and are struck by her brilliance in ironmaking.
Da Dao-Shu fell in love with He and gave herself to him. Lu objected — he hated the Japanese — yet the bond of steel kept them together for life, never to part.
Lu Yun-Xi and He Jia-Yu, following their elders, lived through the westward migration, through partings and deaths under Japanese bombing. When Lu Yun-Xi comes as a battalion commander of the People's Liberation Army to take over the steel plant, He Zi-Zhou returns from America with a degree, and the two join hands once more. Through the waves of the Great Leap Forward, the storms of the Cultural Revolution, and rebirth after reform and opening, they battle in love and contend at work, yet their "ill-fated bond" never breaks. All for steel — for the dream of a strong nation.
Lu Yue and He Chao are like brother and sister. With their parents, the steel plant is their "big" home.
