Description:
In May 1942, Japanese forces in North China launched the "May Day Mopping-Up Operation," encircling the guerrilla base areas of Central Hebei in an iron ring. A reconnaissance unit of the Eighth Route Army led by Liu Han, with brothers Li — hunters from the mountains — as guides, was escorting the liaison officer Mr. Wei to the Central Hebei Military District when they ran into a Japanese mopping-up force. Forced to split up and slip into the county town of Anding one by one, they were ambushed by a plainclothes squad at a contact point in the town. The wounded Liu Han was saved by Hong Da-Bao. With the help of Wang Yu-Lan, head of the women's relief association, he received orders from his superiors: once healed, he was to stay in the Anding area and form an armed working team behind enemy lines to strike at the Japanese. Aided by the progressive young woman Zhong Ting-Ting, the hunter Li Yuan-Jie, Zheng Er-Bao of the anti-Japanese national salvation army, and others, Liu Han engaged the Japanese garrison of Anding in a battle of wits and courage. Resourceful and quick-witted, they used every means at their disposal to hit the invaders, and the team itself grew stronger through the fighting, becoming a bayonet thrust into the enemy's chest. They dealt a heavy blow to the arrogance of the Japanese aggressors, laid the groundwork for the coming counteroffensive of the main forces and the recapture of Anding, and made their own contribution to the final victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan.
