Description:
For the vast majority of Chinese, the name "Xuan Zang" is very unfamiliar; what people know is the Tang monk from "Journey to the West." "Journey to the West" is a classic in the history of Chinese literature, and the power of a classic is beyond doubt. Since Wu Cheng'en created "Journey to the West" in the Ming dynasty, the image of a soft, weak, and gender-ambiguous Tang monk has been deeply engraved in the hearts of Chinese people. While people delight in talking about Sun Wukong, the prototype of the Tang monk, Xuan Zang, has been distorted and misread. Show more Over the course of several centuries, the real Xuan Zang has drifted further and further away, gradually disappearing from the sight of Chinese people, leaving only a blurry silhouette.
In the winter of 2005, in an ordinary teahouse on Ping'an Avenue in Beijing, it was already past midnight. Under dim lights, several men approaching middle age were talking animatedly, almost in a state of ecstasy. The daytime clamor of the city had passed, exhausted people were entering dreamland, and a few sleepless souls wandered the streets in twos and threes. At such a moment, worldly desires and pressures gradually faded, and a passion that had not visited for years began to fill the dim teahouse. A flush crept up faces that had originally been sallow; the daytime restraint and rationality were gone, and youth seemed to have arrived once again.
