Description:
Li Jin-Yong, the overseer of the Mohe gold mines, spares no effort and devotes himself wholeheartedly to raising silver to relieve the famine in Changchun on behalf of the imperial court. Though Li Jin-Yong hails from Jiangnan, he guards the gold mines of the Great Qing, which inevitably invites suspicion in official court circles. Through the intervention of His Excellency Li Hong-Zhang, the Grand Secretary, Li Jin-Yong has just crushed the plot of De Ying, deputy lieutenant-general of the Heilongjiang General's Office, when General Enze's covetousness and distrust regarding the Mohe gold mines follow close on its heels, leaving Li Jin-Yong, burdened with the court's heavy charge, hard-pressed to cope.
In Mohe, besides managing the gold mines, Li Jin-Yong is also responsible for settling and garrisoning the frontier, and has frequent dealings with the neighboring Russian military. Before General Enze's trusted subordinate Zhuo Ha-Bu comes to Mohe to inspect the overseer, Li Jin-Yong is just setting out for the frontier, preparing to discuss border demarcation matters with the Russian general Kuo Er-Fu. For the safety of the gold mines, before departing Li Jin-Yong entrusts the key to the gold vault to his capable and absolutely trustworthy subordinate Ma Xiao-Bian.
On a day of wind and snow, General Enze's trusted subordinate Zhuo Ha-Bu arrives at the gold vault with Master Zhu, and on the grounds that Li Jin-Yong's brother-in-law Zhang Qing and Ma Xiao-Bian, a former bandit, are the ones guarding the vault, questions Li Jin-Yong for appointing people by favoritism and forming cliques for private gain, and demands to inspect the gold vault.
