Before the 1997 Spring Festival, fourth-grader Mo Fei came from the city to the countryside, to the home of his nanny. Mo Fei hadn't brought his homework; he had brought a remote-controlled airplane. Mo Fei's remote-controlled
airplane beat every child in the village! At the nanny's home there was an eight-year-old girl named Zhu Ye, who could sing many lovely songs. She and her brother Zhu Lin braved the biting wind every day to dig for medicinal herbs on the mountain, and
then sold them to a shop in town. Mo Fei's airplane filled the Zhu Lin siblings with immense pride. Da Zhi was the leader of the village children. Da Zhi's father had made a lot of money in business. Da Zhi had firecrackers of all sizes,
and the village children, like Da Mao and Jue Tou, all curried favor with him. Mo Fei's airplane drew the children's admiring gazes, which made Da Zhi feel left out. Da Zhi wanted to buy the airplane. But Mo Fei's airplane was a prize.
