Description:
In the era of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, a bloody storm swept across the land. The common people struggled on the edge of death, gazing at the heavens and crying out in grief: when will this great chaos end?! When will the nation know order? Twenty-one-year-old Zhao Kuang-Yin bids farewell to his parents and wife and sets out to make his way in the world, escorting Jing Niang a thousand li and enduring countless hardships. Troubled times breed heroes: Zhao Kuang-Yin joins Guo Wei and, through his outstanding performance at the Battle of Gaoping, becomes a high-ranking commander of the imperial guard. Show more Gradually he builds his own power within the guard and forms the "Ten Brothers of the Righteous Society." When Chai Rong dies of illness, Zhao Kuang-Yin launches the Chenqiao Mutiny and dons the yellow robe. After ascending the throne, he first crushes the remnants of Later Zhou, then adopts the strategy of "the south first, the north after," conquering the separatist regimes and strengthening the defenses of the north. He then strips his generals of their military power without bloodshed in the "cup of wine releases military authority" affair. Upholding the national policy of "exalting the civil and restraining the martial," he ushers in the glorious golden age of the Great Song. On October 12, 976 AD, Zhao Kuang-Yin dies suddenly, leaving behind an eternal mystery known as "the shadow of the candle and the sound of the axe." Just one day later, his younger brother Zhao Guang-Yi takes the throne and is known in history as Emperor Taizong of Song.
