A film crew is working under intense pressure, yet spirits are low. The key creators are divided, and the director Gai Yu is just as lost, so he has no choice but to turn to the screenwriter Momo, sending her a telegram urging her to come and revise the script, otherwise the film cannot go on. Momo obeys and rushes over, and she and Gai Yu pour out their frustrations to each other: although the script has passed the leadership's review, what it gives the audience is nothing but a false picture of life, like a mask everyone has long worn, so should their film reveal real life, and would the audience have the courage to face their true selves in life? Show more The two fall into the agony of choice and doubt before creation. On a hot summer day, the studio is rushing to shoot a scene set in deep winter. The famous actress Shu Hua, playing the chief engineer, pours out her feelings to the commander-in-chief. At night, Shu Hua returns exhausted to the home she left long ago; the daughter she misses day and night is not there, and the house is in complete disorder. Shu Hua sits on the sofa in a daze. In the hotel banquet hall, people from all walks of life gather to catch a glimpse of the filmmakers. The young and beautiful actress is trapped in a crowd of reporters, flashbulbs keep popping, and everyone seems to be enjoying the cooperation. Shu Hua watches everything calmly and answers people's questions rationally. Amid elegant dresses, perfume, and the clinking of glasses, an agreement is reached: the crew borrows the hotel for filming, and the hotel gains fame through the film, mutually beneficial. Gai Yu pays no attention to any of it, only filling his stomach and falling asleep on the sofa. The hotel basement is the crew's temporary dormitory and the filmmakers' true world, where they live without restraint. Because filming is extended, the hotel staff become dissatisfied. The production manager begs left and right, striving not to exceed the budget and keep the crew alive; Shu Hua does extra gigs for this big family, performing traditional acts and drawing the audience's mockery; Momo, to reveal the true meaning of life, explores painfully together with Gai Yu. The crew responds to all of this with comfort and understanding. The film is finished, and everyone continues along life's road according to their own principles.
