Description:
Two rivers — the calm Singapore River and the surging Maas in Rotterdam — lie between the South Seas and Northern Europe, separated by the vast Pacific Ocean, telling of three unfinished love stories and four shattered dreams.
It is two girls who are wounded. One dies in the arms of the man she deeply loves, carrying with her an endless longing for life. The other goes far away, carrying the sorrowful memory of an old love. It is two men who grieve. One is caught in a dilemma, his heart filled with regret. Show more The other blames fate for being too unkind, for having missed true love. These four shattered dreams hold more regret than sweetness, more cruelty than tenderness.
His name is Li Kai-Lang. He is a policeman, and he once had a naive dream: to have a home of his own — not too big, just enough for a bed and a table. To sit at the same table by day and share the same bed by night with the pure girl who sells pastries across the street. He wanted to marry her, to hold her hand and spend a lifetime together.
His name is Li Jia-Le. He is a student, not yet old enough for dreams, but he will always remember that Mid-Autumn Festival by the Singapore River, when he made a clumsy excuse to go and see a girl. It began to rain by the Singapore River, and while sheltering from it, he made a lantern for the girl out of a mooncake box. The girl smiled at him and gave him a note. That smile he would never forget, and that note he carefully kept. He too thought that when he grew up he would marry her — the pure girl who sells pastries across the street.
Li Jia-Le's dream was shattered, and the one who shattered it was none other than his own elder brother — Li Kai-Lang.
