Description:
In 1947, Chiang Kai-Shek brazenly tore up the peace agreement and launched an all-out civil war against the liberated areas. Zhang Ling-Fu led the elite 74th Reorganized Division, the ace of aces, from Huainan to Huaibei, attacking Lianshui for a second time in a bloody twelve-day battle. Corps commander Chen Zhen-Xin led his troops in a breakout, only to suffer a crushing defeat. Zhang Ling-Fu won battle after battle, taking Huaiyin, Suxian, and Linyi, cutting a swath from northern Jiangsu to southern Shandong and seizing our base areas there. Show more He boasted that he would settle the Shandong question within three months and capture Chen Yi and Su Yu alive.
Facing this enemy-strong, we-weak situation, Mao Zedong devised strategy in Yan'an and made the strategic decision to merge the Shandong Field Army and the Central China Field Army into the East China Field Army, concentrating forces to fight north and south and destroy Chiang Kai-Shek's effective strength.
To wipe out the Shandong People's Liberation Army in one stroke, Chiang Kai-Shek assembled more than 200,000 troops of the Tang En-Bo army group, with Zhang Ling-Fu's 74th Division as the spearhead, advancing abreast from south to north, and ordered Li Xianzhou's army group in Jinan to push south from north to the Laiwu-Xintai line, attempting a pincer attack on our forces from north and south. Chen and Su decided to leave Chen Zhen-Xin's troops to block the southern front while the main force encircled and annihilated Li Xianzhou's troops. The famous Laiwu Campaign began. The 50,000 enemy troops at Laiwu tried to break out toward Tusikou. Chen Zhen-Xin's troops flew to seize Tusikou, cutting off the enemy's retreat and annihilating Li Xianzhou's army group entirely. Unwilling to accept defeat, the Nationalist forces again made Zhang Ling-Fu the spearhead and attacked Mengyin County in Shandong, vainly attempting to wipe out our East China Field Army in the Yimeng mountain region. With the boldness of taking the enemy commander's head from amid a million troops, Chen and Su encircled and annihilated the 74th Division. Zhang Ling-Fu, reckless of life and death, occupied Menglianggu, vainly hoping to use the tactics of blooming from the center and closing in from all sides to put our army to death. The two armies, 720,000 strong, fought a fierce battle for three days and three nights in the tiny Menglianggu mountain area, blood flowing like rivers and corpses strewn everywhere. In the end, Chen Zhen-Xin's troops climbed the cliffs by forming human ladders, captured the main peak of Menglianggu, and drove straight into Zhang Ling-Fu's command post in a stone cave. Zhang Ling-Fu put up a desperate resistance, determined to die for his cause, but was shot dead by our troops.
A earth-shaking classic campaign, in which the balance of power between the Nationalists and Communists was vastly unequal, yet victory and defeat were reversed in an instant.
