Yet none of the court's generals can bear the weight of lifting the siege, and no one is fit to take command of the campaign. The Song emperor has no choice but to order the Eighth Prince Zhao De-Fang and the Minister of Rites Kou Huai to the Tianbo Yang Mansion to call up a commander. Show more She Tai-Jun declares her undying loyalty to country and family, to saving the nation and its people, but says the Yang household has no general left to send. The honest Eighth Prince does not know what to do, while the old Kou Huai, thoroughly familiar with the Yang family, has already seen that something must lie behind it. So he lures the old matriarch into the inner hall to prepare a banquet for them, while he himself drags the Eighth Prince off to the martial training ground in the rear garden. There they see sabers, spears, swords and halberds standing thick as a forest, and hoofprints scattered in wild confusion, all freshly made. The two men then strike the advance drum and sound the recall gong; at the third roll of the drum, the men and women soldiers and generals of the Yang household indeed suddenly assemble before the Gathering Generals Terrace, and Mu Gui-Ying, clad in full armor and awe-inspiring, strides into the training hall. The two are overjoyed. Then suddenly they hear the old matriarch order the troops withdrawn, and Kou Huai hastily invokes the prince's name to summon the young madam to the front hall for discussion. The two explain to her the siege of Hongzhou, and she is filled with fierce indignation, longing to step forward, yet in an instant she hesitates, and stammering, cannot bring herself to speak.
