In 1950, to boost Tibet's economic development and link Beijing with Lhasa, young pilots of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force were ordered to open a route through the mysterious "forbidden air zone." The comrades of the weather unit set out first: they were to set up a weather station, take meteorological measurements, and prepare for the arrival of the aircraft. Xu Rui, a young woman from the third weather group, bade farewell to her husband, the pilot Zhao Zhong-Kai, and came with the team to the Kham-Tibet Plateau. Show more With the help of their Tibetan compatriots, they advanced toward the Great Snow Mountains. Suddenly an avalanche broke out on the mountain; a raging blizzard swept down and engulfed everything, trapping the members of the third weather group in the mountains. Their radio was smashed, and contact with the base was cut off. Illness, cold, hunger, and death threatened them. The air force leadership decided to send aircraft, combining the rescue of the comrades stranded in the mountains with the opening of an air route, and this arduous task was entrusted to the seven comrades of Zhao Zhong-Kai's and Zhang Qi-Liang's crews. Zhao Zhong-Kai flew his plane toward the perilous pass, and just as he was preparing to cross the peak, the left engine failed and the flight could not continue. They spotted an opening in the mountainside and planned on the next flight to fly through the cave and over the perilous pass.
