Description:
Adapted from the original works of Wang Di, Jiang Qing-Wen, Cui Bao-Ku, and Chang Xiang-Ge. In a certain place in the Northeast, the director of the "Forward" agricultural cooperative, Wang Ce, brings everyone good news from the city: the county has approved the establishment of an advanced cooperative. The young people busily prepare the meeting hall, getting ready to hold a meeting to appraise the horses and join the cooperative. Some of the older folks are weighed down with worries, and Oldman Chang is especially afraid of being taken advantage of. Show more At the meeting to appraise the horses and join the cooperative, Wang Ce sets the price of his own horse a bit lower, and the appraised price comes out a bit lower too. Seeing this, Oldman Chang panics and secretly slips out of the meeting hall. Back home, Oldman Chang is in the stable stroking his sturdy horse when Bao Hua comes looking for him to attend the meeting, and he hastily hides in the house. Aunt Chang grabs Bao Hua and asks her all sorts of questions, and Bao Hua takes the opportunity to explain to Aunt Chang the benefits of forming an advanced cooperative. Aunt Chang is delighted to hear it. Bao Hua finds Oldman Chang, but he pleads a toothache and flatly refuses to go to the meeting. Oldman Chang thinks that perhaps their old home in Shandong has not yet set up an advanced cooperative, and that he might as well go back to Shandong. He anxiously waits for a letter from his younger brother in Shandong, but it never comes. When Oldman Chang hears from his daughter Xiu-Lan that the horse has already been appraised and entered into the cooperative on her authority, he flies into a rage. Xiu-Lan is stubborn too, and leads the horse away, determined to join the advanced cooperative. Aunt Chang hurries off to find the cooperative director Wang Ce, begging him to mediate.
