Description:
Young technician Lu Ye begins with a prejudice against the newly transferred Shanghai girls, believing they care only for fine clothes and good times and have no love for work. But the inspector at their construction site, Bai Mei, happens to be a Shanghai girl herself. Through her willingness to endure hardship on the job, Bai Mei gradually changes Lu Ye's view of her, and their work brings them into contact often enough that feelings grow between them. Later, carried away by the praise and rewards he has received, Lu Ye ignores Bai Mei's warnings and optimistically adopts a new construction method. Show more Though Bai Mei secretly loves Lu Ye, for the sake of the project's quality she writes to the leadership to report the situation. The bureaucratic Manager Lin, however, passes the letter to Bai Mei's superiors, and she is criticized and transferred away from the site. On the eve of her departure, Bai Mei once more gives Lu Ye a final warning, but he not only refuses to listen but grows even more resentful toward her. When the project is finished, Lu Ye discovers that it fails to meet quality standards and has caused the state enormous losses. He also feels he has wronged Bai Mei, and the anguish, together with the exhaustion of redoing the work, finally makes him fall ill. Later, Bai Mei and the others are transferred to the northwest to support a new construction site, and before leaving she visits Lu Ye in the hospital.
