Description:
In early 1927, amid the joyous celebrations of the victory of the Northern Expedition, Dong Bi-Wu arrived in Hankou and took lodging in the home of his good friend Tang Yun-Jie, president of the court. Faced with Chiang Kai-Shek's anti-communist policy, Dong Bi-Wu invited progressive figures to discuss countermeasures against the increasingly brazen reactionary forces in the countryside, and together they drafted the "Provisional Regulations on Punishing Local Tyrants and Evil Gentry" and organized a grain-collection team to go to the countryside, with Zheng Hu, chairman of the peasant association of Qizi Township in Huang'an County, as its leader. Show more Tang Yun-Jie's daughter Chu-Mei and her middle-school classmates also joined the grain-collection team. Before many days had passed, Zheng Hu was suddenly arrested; the newspapers accused him of murder, arson, and burning grain, and claimed that "someone is behind him," pointing directly at Dong Bi-Wu. Wang Jing-Wei and Tang Yun-Jie's in-law Kong Ji-Shi, a standing committee member of the Kuomintang's Hubei Provincial Party Headquarters, colluded and forced Tang Yun-Jie to serve as presiding judge in the "Zheng Hu case." To rescue Zheng Hu, the renowned lawyer Feng Zheng-Hao, assigned by the Communist Party, decided to appear in court to defend Zheng Hu. One day, Kong Shao-Rong, now promoted to captain of Wang Jing-Wei's guard, invited his fiancee Chu-Mei out and won her trust with feigned affection. Chu-Mei poured out the whole truth of how she had witnessed Kong Shao-Rong's grandfather, Kong Gui-Nian, set fire to the grain warehouse and kill the old night watchman, then shift the blame onto Zheng Hu. The next day, the lawyer Feng died under the wheels of a car belonging to the guard corps.
