Description:
In the autumn of 1949, the People's Liberation Army reached the Hani Mountains. On the very first day after the troops entered the mountains, they came upon a man in a black mask robbing a caravan of the tu si on the road. The tu si reported to the PLA that the remnants of Ma Peng's bandit gang had already fled across the border, and that the only force in the area was a gang of "black-masked bandits" who "kill, burn, and stop at nothing." The local people, however, said otherwise: the "black-masked bandits" robbed only the tu si and Ma Peng and never harmed the poor. Show more A reconnaissance platoon of the PLA resolved to rely on the local people and quickly find out the truth about Ma Peng's gang and the "black-masked bandits." Ga Luo, a soldier of the Hani people, went into the village to ask after his beloved Zong Ni. Zong Ni's mother, Aunt Yi Ge, told him that Ma Peng had abducted Zong Ni and sold her abroad. Ga Luo was grief-stricken. The PLA was carrying out work among the people when it was suddenly attacked. Sha Mu, who had been forced to join Ma Peng's gang, returned to the village at night to see his wife, his face smeared black. Platoon leader Da Hai and Ga Luo, after analyzing the situation, concluded that Ma Peng's gang had not fled abroad, and that their disguised raids were meant to lure the PLA into the Black Pine Forest. In a cave deep in the Black Pine Forest, the man in the black mask was reading a PLA proclamation. "Elder Brother" Zong Ni recalled the bitter past: three years earlier, Ma Peng's gang had tried to sell her and a dozen other sisters to a foreign boss. Resisting the bandits' abuse, Zong Ni seized a rifle and shot the squad leader dead.
