Description:
Around 1935, Japanese imperialism intensified its aggression against our country. At a moment when the national crisis had reached unprecedented severity, Chiang Kai-Shek still clung to the policy of "pacifying the interior before resisting foreign aggression," and General Zhang Xue-Liang was forced to "suppress the Communists." Having suffered repeated defeats on the northern Shaanxi front and incurred Chiang Kai-Shek's reproaches, he was eager to find a way out. During the convening of the Kuomintang's "Fifth National Congress," he and General Yang Hu-Cheng separately made contact with our Party through the progressive figures Du Zhong-Yuan and Tian Wen-Hao. After returning from Nanjing to Xi'an, Zhang Xue-Liang, through Gao Fu-Yuan — a former regimental commander of the Northeast Army released by our forces — held talks with Comrade Zhou En-Lai in Yan'an. General Zhang resolved to persuade Chiang Kai-Shek, in the name of the nation's survival, to stop the civil war and unite against the Japanese. Meanwhile, Yang Hu-Cheng received a handwritten letter sent to him by Chairman Mao. However, their activities had long since drawn the attention of Li Da-Quan and Zheng Guang-Qing, the Kuomintang secret police chiefs planted in Xi'an, who reported on them to Nanjing.
To strike back at the rampant activities of the secret agents, Zhang Xue-Liang ordered the ransacking of the Kuomintang's Shaanxi Provincial Party Headquarters. This incident pushed Zhang and Yang to join hands and shook Chiang Kai-Shek, who was then in Nanjing overseeing the settlement of the "Guangdong-Guangxi mutiny." In early December 1936, Chiang Kai-Shek came to Xi'an in person and stayed at the Huaqing Pool in Lintong. Zhang Xue-Liang repeatedly offered Chiang "bitter admonitions," all of which were sharply rejected. Chiang Kai-Shek gave him three days to answer whether he would continue to carry out the order to "suppress the Communists," failing which he would transfer the Eastern and Northwestern armies of Zhang and Yang Hu-Cheng out of Shaanxi. Zhang and Yang were forced on December 12, 1936, to carry out a "military admonition" against Chiang, and the "Xi'an Incident," which shocked the world, broke out.
After the incident, our Party, at the invitation of Generals Zhang and Yang, sent a delegation headed by Zhou En-Lai to Xi'an by air. Proceeding from the greater cause of the nation's survival, Zhou En-Lai persuaded Zhang and Yang and secured Chiang Kai-Shek's acceptance of the "Eight-Point Program" for resisting Japan and saving the nation. The "Xi'an Incident" was resolved peacefully, and the War of Resistance Against Japan entered a brand-new stage.
