Description:
The story follows Lin Qiu, who arrives in Beijing determined to become a singing star, convinced that her dream is sure to come true here. But after a farcical mishap, Lin Qiu meets Liu Xiao-Mei, a Beijing drifter working at a bar. Liu Xiao-Mei, long since reconciled to reality, finds Lin Qiu's dream utterly absurd, though Lin Qiu dismisses her doubts. Yet Lin Qiu soon sees how cruel reality can be: Beijing's exorbitant rent forces her to share a basement room with Yuan Zai, who has spent six years as an extra. Show more Yuan Zai tells Lin Qiu that the entertainment industry runs deep, and that those who cannot swim will only drown. Lin Qiu insists that talent and hard work decide everything, but then the honest and naive Lin Qiu first runs into the casting-couch rules of a talent show, and is then cheated out of most of her savings by a shell company that claims it will produce an album for her. Misfortune follows misfortune, and a whole series of unlucky events unfolds.
