Description:
After years of study in Japan, Li Shutong (Pu Cun-Xin) finally returned to the homeland he had longed for. It was the time of the successful Xinhai Revolution, and he cheered for the republic, serving as editor of the supplement of the Pacific Times, full of hope for the nation's bright future. But the good times did not last. Before long the country fell into the chaos of warlord infighting, and Li Shutong transformed from a Western-suited editor into a modest scholar in plain cloth, earning his living by teaching calligraphy and painting. Show more In those years he nurtured a group of future art masters, including Feng Zikai (Yin Zhi) and Liu Zhiping (Hu Guang-Zi). By then Li Shutong had developed a deep interest in Buddhist studies and entered monastic life, taking the dharma name Hongyi. Master Taixu (Liu Wei-Ming), abbot of the Minnan Buddhist Academy, and Master Hongyi both held grand aspirations; though of different schools, they ultimately arrived at the same destination by different paths. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, Master Hongyi, despite grave illness, persisted in the movement to resist Japan and save the nation, composing songs of salvation to boost morale. On October 13, 1942, this master of his generation passed away.
