Description:
This is a story about the first generation of national industrialists, saving the country through industry, and unremitting self-improvement. It is also a story of drifting, telling of how even in a barren and cruel era of chaos, there is still true love, sacrifice, and moments of self-sacrifice. More than that, it is a story of mutual redemption — women redeeming men, the weak redeeming the strong. On the Shanghai Bund of 1930, a magnificent legend of a chaotic era unfolds.
As the head of a family descended from Mencius of Shandong, Meng Wen-Lu received a modern education yet still carries on the Confucian spirit that "every man is responsible for the rise and fall of the world." Show more After returning from studying abroad, he strives to sever the family business's ties to the illegal forces of the underworld, pinning the family's future on the path of saving the country through industry, in order to save a China teetering on the brink. Thus the great drama of an exchange of power on the Shanghai Bund officially begins.
Meanwhile, Zhang Bi-Lan, sent to Shanghai by her parents' arrangement to marry, inadvertently rescues Meng Wen-Lu, the young master of the Meng household. Just like that, unprepared, she stumbles into the dazzling world of the foreign concessions, and amid the tangled grudges and entanglements of the Meng family, plays out a peerless, ill-fated romance.
The usurper hidden within the Meng household harbors a deep hatred from the previous generation; the highly placed strategist who lends his full assistance — what conspiracy does he set in motion? Caught in the whirlpool, Meng Wen-Lu now faces a political marriage and his true love in his heart.
