The story takes place in the final years of the Qing Dynasty. To save his beloved daughter's life, Prince Jing (Xu Lian-Sheng) is forced to grasp at any straw and summons Xi Lai-Le (Li Bao-Tian), a country doctor from Cangzhou. The princess, whom the imperial physician Wang Tian-He (Du Yu-Lu) had pronounced beyond cure, is miraculously brought back to life by Xi Lai-Le's unorthodox methods. Xi Lai-Le has no ambitions and no wish to remain in the capital, that nest of intrigue, but fate has other plans: Prince Jing not only tricks him into staying but moves his entire family and his Cangzhou clinic, the Yixiao Tang, to the capital. Show more From then on, the arrogant physician Wang nurses a grudge against Xi Lai-Le and repeatedly schemes to do him harm. The fortunate Xi Lai-Le not only escapes every plot but wins the title of miracle doctor in the capital thanks to his own invented remedies and bizarre tricks. To put Xi Lai-Le's mind at ease and keep him in the capital, Prince Jing even brings his old flame from Cangzhou, the widow Sai Xi-Shi (Echo Chen), and her restaurant, Shi Wei Tian, to a spot right across from the Yixiao Tang. Xi Lai-Le's jealous wife, Hu Su-Hua (Liang Li), is already a formidable tigress not to be trifled with, and Sai Xi-Shi's arrival turns the whole household upside down day after day. As Xi Lai-Le's fame grows, he even earns the appreciation of the emperor and Empress Dowager Ci Xi, while Physician Wang redoubles his efforts to destroy him. What lies ahead for Xi Lai-Le and his family?
