Show more Kang Xi deeply respects his wet nurse, and at her fiftieth birthday celebration a most bizarre and eerie affair unfolds. One strange event follows another in endless succession. No one strikes the drum, yet the sound of it rolls like thunder. A ghost leads Tan Zhen-Ying to uncover the truth behind the deaths of more than ten people, a truth that entangles Kang Xi's own affections. On an incognito tour, Kang Xi takes in a street urchin selling himself into servitude named "Long Er." Long Er wins the Empress Dowager's affection, yet it brings about the unprovoked pursuit and attempted murder of both the boy and his mother. In adversity, Tan peels back layer after layer, only to reveal a romantic episode from Kang Xi's days among the common folk. At court, the son of a military officer, competing for the beautiful daughter of an innkeeper, accidentally beats to death the son of a prince. Tan is ordered to investigate, only to discover that the officer's son is in fact the illegitimate child of the prince and the innkeeper, and that all of this was part of the innkeeper's revenge scheme. The imperial son-in-law, confronted by his own mother and younger brother, fails to recognize them, arousing Tan's suspicions.
