The 2010 TV series Liao Zhai 3 consists of six story arcs: The Painted Wall, The Plum Maiden, Jiangcheng, Bai Qiu-Lian, Geng Niang, and Gongsun Jiu-Niang.
The Painted Wall
Torrential rain, wild lightning, fierce wind, driving storm. A bolt of lightning tears through the temple roof and strikes a mural inside Lanruo Temple. The mural seems to undergo a strange change, and the next morning all the monks in the temple vanish without a trace — even the officials who come to investigate disappear. From then on, Lanruo Temple becomes a cursed place: cobwebs, dust, no incense, no worshippers. Show more Years later, Meng Long-Tan and Zhu Xiao-Lian go out for an outing and are caught in a downpour. They take shelter in a lonely temple nearby — and it is none other than Lanruo Temple. Inside, everything is covered in cobwebs and dust, yet the murals on both sides of the hall shine with unusual brightness, out of place in the ruined temple. The two murals depict two fairies of surpassing beauty, their eyes full of feeling, each drawing in one of the men. Just then two monsters suddenly appear and try to kill them. Meng Long-Tan is saved by Meng Fan, Zhu Xiao-Lian by Meng Yan. In truth, these two women are no fairies, but a fox spirit and a snake spirit. Yet the fox spirit Meng Fan falls in love with Meng Long-Tan, while Meng Yan only bewitches Zhu Xiao-Lian, waiting for the chance to drain his vital essence and strengthen her powers. Both men's souls are drawn by the demons into the painted wall, while their bodies collapse on the temple floor. A monk named Qing Shui discovers what has happened and tries to save them, but Meng and Zhu have already been bewitched by the creatures in the mural and want to stay in its world. In the end, Qing Shui casts his spell once more, saves them, and enters the mural himself, where he kills Heishan, who threatened the mortal world. But once Heishan is killed, the gate to the outside world closes as well. Then Meng Fan steps forward, ready to sacrifice herself to save Meng, Zhu, Qing, and Su-Niang. Meng cannot bear it and holds her back, while Qing Shui realizes that the newborn child of Zhu and Su-Niang can save them all. The gate opens, but Meng refuses to part from Meng Fan and stays behind to be with her forever. Zhu, Qing, and Su-Niang leave, but outside the mural they see that Heishan is not dead. So Qing Shui returns to the mural once more — for Heishan, and for the wife and daughter he found in that world of illusion. Only Su-Niang and Zhu Xiao-Lian remain outside the mural with their child, beginning a new life.
The Plum Maiden
The common girl Pan Xue-Mei is slandered by the clerk Wang Zheng-Xiong and hangs herself, becoming a ghost of the hanged. Her tears before death happen to fall upon a thousand-year clay demon who, while cultivating his true form, had rampaged among mortals and killed the innocent, and had been wounded by the Supreme Lord Laozi and was slowly crumbling. The tears stop his disintegration, letting him linger on. Twenty years later, the poor scholar Feng Yun-Ting and his friend Han Ji-Zu set out for the examinations. On the way, seeing a plum tree about to wither, Feng kindly waters it, and the plum tree revives. It turns out that Pan Xue-Mei's soul resides within the plum blossom. One night, Feng Yun-Ting reads by lamplight, knocks over the oil lamp, and nearly starts a fire. Pan Xue-Mei appears to save him, repaying his kindness in saving the flowers. Unafraid of the boundary between human and ghost, Feng Yun-Ting begins to associate with her. The thousand-year clay demon, to heal his wounds, takes human form and accepts Wang Zheng-Xiong as a disciple; from then on the two begin to amass wealth through evil deeds and to run rampant on their power. To rid the people of this scourge, Pan Xue-Mei joins with Hong-Ma, Shu-Lan, and other wandering ghosts to oppose Wang Zheng-Xiong and the clay demon. After many hardships, Wang Zheng-Xiong is finally destroyed, and Pan Xue-Mei is reborn as Zhan Min, daughter of the examiner Zhan. Feng Yun-Ting's friend Han Ji-Zu is controlled by the clay demon and deceives Zhan Min; she forgets all her former memories, falls in love with Han Ji-Zu, and on their wedding day remembers her past. She loves Feng Yun-Ting again, but the clay demon still will not let them be. In the end they defeat the clay demon and live together.
Jiangcheng
The young orphan Lin Feng hunts to make a living. One day by a mountain stream he saves a wounded white rabbit, brings it home to heal, and releases it once it recovers. From then on, the white rabbit and its companion the gray rabbit often come to keep the boy company, making the lonely Lin Feng very happy. But the good times do not last: one day the white rabbit is killed by a giant python. Lin Feng sees it and shoots the snake dead, but the white rabbit is already gone. Decades later, the boy is reborn into an official's family and named Gao Fan. Clever and handsome from childhood, he is known far and wide as a talented youth. As an adult he marries the young and beautiful Jiangcheng, who in her past life was that white rabbit. But through an accident, the python from the past life possesses Jiangcheng's body, and from then on their sweet life changes: whenever the python stirs, the once gentle Jiangcheng makes things difficult for Gao Fan in every way, each time worse than before, until at last she simply beats him. Gao Fan complains bitterly, but because he loves his wife too much to leave her, he can only endure. In the end, with the help of a master, the python is subdued. The vengeful spirit leaves the body, Jiangcheng returns to normal, and becomes a gentle and considerate wife again, and she and Gao Fan return to a sweet and loving life.
Bai Qiu-Lian
The fish spirits Qiu-Lian and Qiu-Ju, who gained human form after a thousand years of cultivation, play in the mortal world. Qiu-Ju falls in love with the demon-slaying Zhen-Jun, while Bai Qiu-Lian on the road saves Mu Chan-Gong, who appears to be a scholar but is in truth a wandering hero of rare skill. From then on Bai Qiu-Lian cannot forget Mu Chan-Gong and tries every means to meet him. But Mu Chan-Gong remains unmoved, for his heart already belongs to Tong Xiao-Mei. Yet Bai Qiu-Lian loves him deeply still, and at last moves Mu Chan-Gong, making him love her in return. But their path of love is not smooth: the Dragon King of Dongting Lake, the dragon prince, Bai's mother, and others constantly sabotage them. In the end, the love of Bai Qiu-Lian and Mu Chan-Gong moves the Bodhisattva Guanyin, and they can finally be together, but Bai Qiu-Lian can never return to Dongting Lake, which was once hers; and Qiu-Ju, for killing the innocent, is forced back into her true form and condemned to live forever in lakes, while Zhen-Jun asks to become a fish as well. Five years later, in their new home stands a large fish tank, in which two fish play. Bai Qiu-Lian and Mu Chan-Gong speak with feeling of the price they paid for love.
Geng Niang
Geng Niang and Jin Da-Yong have shared two lifetimes of love, and in the third they become husband and wife again, deeply devoted to each other. But the good times do not last: a friend Jin Da-Yong rescued on Baihu Lake takes a liking to Geng Niang, and for this Jin Da-Yong is murdered for his wealth and his body thrown into the lake. Geng Niang wants to avenge her husband, but she too is badly wounded and thrown into the water. Fortunately she is saved by a dragon girl, who offers to merge with Geng Niang as one, giving her an undying body so she can avenge her husband. But when she breathes her last breath, she will suffer the most terrible pain in the world, like being cut into a thousand pieces. Geng Niang agrees, comes back to life, and is rescued by Wang Shi-Ba, who brings her home. Wang Shi-Ba's brother Wang Shi-Jiu feels that Geng Niang has not come with good intentions, and a high monk tells him that Geng Niang is a dragon demon. Geng Niang finally avenges her husband by killing Wang Shi-Ba, and also learns that Jin Da-Yong is alive, so she searches everywhere for him. To subdue Geng Niang, Wang Shi-Jiu is willing to shave his head and abandon his beloved, going up the mountain to study the law under the name Shang-Zheng. At last heaven rewards the persistent: Geng Niang and Jin Da-Yong meet again, but are already separated by life and death. Geng Niang vows to help her husband return to life. A hundred years later, Shang-Zheng finds Geng Niang, learns the whole story, and, feeling that heaven mocks mortals, joins Geng Niang and the dragon girl in stirring up the heavens and earth. Soon heaven and earth open and persuade them all to let go: such is the law of heaven, but an exception can be made once, allowing Shang-Zheng, Dan-Er, and Da-Yong to start anew. Geng Niang willingly accepts the suffering to save them all, turning into a wisp of smoke and bidding the mortal world farewell with a smile.
Gongsun Jiu-Niang
During the Shunzhi reign of the Qing dynasty, the Laiyang county magistrate Hu Xiao-Tian, relying on his official power, oppresses the people. Zhan Yun and his junior sister Gongsun Jiu-Niang resist the tyranny, but are outnumbered and both die heroically. The scholar Du Huai-Sheng, on his way to visit his friend Zhu Kang, comes to Laiyang but mistakenly enters a black inn and nearly dies. He is saved by a female warrior — none other than Gongsun Jiu-Niang, who died heroically a month earlier in the resistance. Her heroic spirit has since wandered the world, still righting wrongs everywhere and bent on killing the evil official Hu Xiao-Tian to rid the people of this scourge. Du Huai-Sheng arrives at his friend Zhu Kang's place and learns that Zhu Kang has already died. To find out the cause of his friend's death, he stays in the now empty Zhu house, and happens to meet Gongsun Jiu-Niang, who saved him. Later the two begin to meet often, and thus begins a tale of love between man and ghost. In the end Jiu-Niang and Zhan Yun are taken away by the Black and White Impermanence. Waiting for Jiu-Niang, Huai-Sheng never marries. Waiting for Huai-Sheng, Cai-Ling never marries.
