Description:

Wei-Gu, daughter of the mistress of the Suwei Flower Nursery, was clever, quick-witted, lively, and restless. One day, Wei-Gu happened to meet Feng Zi-Yu, a young man from a prominent city family, and the two hit it off at once. Zi-Yu invited Wei-Gu to the Feng residence and introduced her to his mother. Madam Feng, who had lived alone for a long time and felt deeply lonely, was delighted by Wei-Gu's lively charm and took her as a goddaughter. From then on, Wei-Gu often visited the Feng household, her friendship with Zi-Yu grew firmer by the day, and she gradually fell in love with him. Show more The father of Zi-Yu's fiancee, Jiang Yun-Yu, Jiang Shu-Song, was appointed to a mining bureau in Jiangxi and took his family with him. Jiang Shu-Song fell gravely ill, and his concubine, utterly lacking in virtue, seized the opportunity to vie for power and profit, subjecting Yun-Yu to cruel mistreatment. Before long, Jiang Shu-Song passed away, and Zi-Yu, obeying his mother's wishes, brought Yun-Yu back. The three met again, joy and sorrow mingling. Seeing Zi-Yu and Yun-Yu so intimate, Wei-Gu felt a sense of loss. One day, Madam Feng took Yun-Yu and Wei-Gu for a stroll in the garden, where they were inadvertently seen by Ye Zong-Chang, son of a wealthy family. Captivated by Yun-Yu's beauty, Ye Zong-Chang schemed to take her as his wife and sought Wei-Gu's advice. Ye Zong-Chang was a longtime customer of the Suwei Flower Nursery and had known Wei-Gu for years. Wei-Gu was initially troubled and hesitated, but a selfish impulse stirred within her, and she directed Ye Zong-Chang to Yun-Yu's uncle, Jiang Shu-Bai. Jiang Shu-Bai was Jiang Shu-Song's half-brother by the same father, sharp-witted but base in character, ready to betray conscience for gain. Bought off by Ye Zong-Chang, he constantly slandered Yun-Yu in front of Madam Feng. Madam Feng, conservative in her thinking, was indeed alienated and declared the engagement broken. Yun-Yu, stunned by the sudden turn and unable to understand why, fell into depression and wasted away day by day. Jiang Shu-Bai seized the chance to propose a match with Ye Zong-Chang, but Yun-Yu firmly refused. Seeing Yun-Yu perpetually melancholy and ill, Jiang Shu-Bai feared that if something happened to her, his reward would slip away, and he forcibly ordered Yun-Yu, in the name of an elder, to set a date to marry Ye Zong-Chang. Unable to bear it any longer, Yun-Yu bent over her desk and wrote a suicide note, bidding Zi-Yu a final farewell. Wei-Gu came to visit and happened upon Yun-Yu's tormented state; learning that Yun-Yu was determined not to change her mind and would fight to the death, she was overcome with guilt and bitterly reproached herself for aiding the wicked for personal gain. She confessed everything, then rushed to Madam Feng and exposed all of Jiang Shu-Bai's schemes, kneeling and repenting her own wrongdoing. Everyone hurried to the Jiang house to welcome Yun-Yu, but she had already broken a window, climbed over the fence, and fled into the rain. The night was deep and the rain heavy; Zi-Yu and the others searched everywhere in vain and returned dejected. Wei-Gu's family came with news that Yun-Yu was at the Suwei Flower Nursery. Everyone rushed to the nursery, and Madam Feng and Yun-Yu embraced, weeping. Wei-Gu, however, exhausted from running through the rainy night and overwhelmed by panic and confusion, kept falling, suffered severe injuries, and ultimately passed away, a fragrant flower faded. Zi-Yu and Yun-Yu buried Wei-Gu and wept at her grave, grief-stricken beyond measure.
