In 742 AD, the first year of the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, the Japanese monks Rongrui and Puzhao and others, having heard of the fame of the monk Jian Zhen, made a special journey to Daming Temple in Yangzhou to pay their respects to him and earnestly urged him to go to Japan to spread the Dharma. To carry Buddhism eastward across the sea, the great monk Jian Zhen endured five failed attempts, during which he suffered the passing of his disciples, obstruction by government authorities, and even the loss of his eyesight... Show more yet his resolve never wavered. He transmitted the flourishing Chinese Buddhism of the time, along with Chinese medicine, art, architecture, and literature, to Japan by sea.
The monk Jian Zhen not only introduced the precepts, thereby completing the establishment of the Ritsu school in Japan, but also indirectly influenced the rise of two great masters in Japanese Buddhist history—Kukai of the Shingon school and Saicho of the Tendai school—and thus helped bring about the flourishing of Japanese Buddhism during the Heian and Kamakura periods. In terms of cultural influence, the architecture, sculpture, calligraphy, painting, medicine, and even daily necessities brought over by the master as he crossed eastward left Japan a precious and rich legacy of Tang dynasty culture. It is for this reason that the monk Jian Zhen is praised as the 'giant of Japan's Tenpyo culture.'
