Description:
In the winter of 1947, the Kuomintang army launched a major offensive against the East China Liberated Area. After winning seven successive battles in northern Jiangsu, our East China forces made a great stride backward in order to annihilate the enemy completely. At first, some soldiers could not understand this. Battalion Commander Gao of the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment of a certain division, led his troops to Taocun in the Yimeng Mountains to await orders. The villagers also had objections to the retreat. Show more
To calm the soldiers and the villagers, Battalion Commander Gao and village head Zhao Yumin each explained the intentions of the higher command. Just then, the situation suddenly changed. The enemy, believing our army was retreating in defeat, concentrated three hundred thousand troops and closed in on our forces from three directions, intending to fight a decisive battle.
Our army held off the enemy for six days and nights at the Dasha River in front of Taocun, then moved to Fenghuang Mountain to surround and annihilate the seven divisions of the enemy's General Li, which our forces had already trapped there. Battalion Commander Gao was ordered to block the troops of the enemy's General Zhang coming to reinforce at Motian Ridge. After the battle of Fenghuang Mountain ended, Battalion Commander Gao was again ordered to serve as the vanguard in encircling and annihilating the enemy reinforcements.
The enemy fell back south of the Dasha River and put up a desperate resistance. Battalion Commander Gao took a small path and secretly crossed the Dasha River, cutting off the enemy's retreat. The enemy wanted to blow up the dam upstream on the Dasha River and use the water to stop our army. Zhao Yumin led the guerrillas to cut the fuse on the dam, saving it. Our army crossed the Dasha River, annihilated the enemy, and both the enemy's General Zhang and his chief of staff were captured alive.
