Xiao Long-Nu grew up in the Ancient Tomb and knew little of the ways of other martial arts schools. When she falls in love with her student Yang Guo, it is a scandal to those around them, and Xiao Long-Nu herself must contend with the customs of the world in which he was raised. TVB alone adapted this story several times, with the role going to both Ida Chan Yuk-Lin and Carman Lee Yeuk-Tung.

In Jin Yong's novel The Return of the Condor Heroes, Xiao Long-Nu (小龍女) grew up in the Ancient Tomb Sect, which keeps itself apart from the other martial arts schools. Yang Guo, the son of one of the heroes of the previous book, arrives at the tomb as a boy. He calls Xiao Long-Nu aunt and learns from her. Here he sees how one can find one's way in the dark and how the mistress of the tomb commands her jade bees when uninvited guests need to be driven off.

When Xiao Long-Nu and Yang Guo fight together, the techniques of the Ancient Tomb and the Quanzhen Sect complement each other. This is what makes their duels in the novel so memorable. Things become far harder for them when those around them learn of their love. In the martial arts schools, master and disciple are bound by obligations almost like members of a family. Xiao Long-Nu grew up apart from this world and sees no reason to give up marriage simply because others consider it unacceptable.

In the TVB series Return of the Condor Heroes (1983), Xiao Long-Nu was played by Ida Chan, and Yang Guo by Andy Lau. In the 1995 version for the same TVB, the role went to Carman Lee. On the mainland, she was played by Crystal Liu in the 2006 series. In Romance of the Condor Heroes (2014), Xiao Long-Nu was played by Michelle Chen.
